Penn Valley Fire Protection District Station

The Penn Valley Fire Protection District officially formed in 1974 succeeding the Penn Valley Volunteer Fire Department. The District serves 92 square miles in western Nevada County, including the Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, Kentucky Flat, Mooney Flat and the Big Oak areas.

The District is governed by a five member Board of Directors elected by the citizens of the District. Administration personnel consist of a Fire Chief and a Battalion Chief. We have ten full-time personnel working a 48/96 platoon shift schedule. Of the ten full-time personnel, six are Fire Apparatus Engineers and four are Firefighters. Filling the balance of the shifts with part-time firefighters. Eight of the ten full-time personnel are Paramedics.

The District also employs eight to ten part-time personnel and uses several paid call firefighters who live in the area to augment staffing needs. We have an active Firefighter Intern Program for members of the public considering a career in the Fire Service. We have an active Fire Explorer Program for young people interested in learning about the Fire Service.

The District operates three fire stations, two of which are staffed twenty-four hours a day with a minimum of two personnel. The third station relies on volunteers or off-duty personnel for staffing. Apparatus includes four fire engines, one water tender, three ambulances and three staff vehicles.

Penn Valley Fire Protection District is the only fire agency in Western Nevada County that provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics and an ambulance service. Each staffed station has a minimum of one fire engine and one ambulance with the necessary equipment to deliver ALS care to our citizens.
